Hey, just wanted to see if any of my fellow San Antonians were out there... So what's everybody think about the Saints game yesterday? I say: "GOOD GAME," but sad we lost... Oh well, next time! Anyway, have a nice day!!!
Ya know I thought there'd be a bunch of cowboys
here when I came down to San Antonio...wrong.
Do ya got any there in Marble Falls?
Do ya got any ya can spare???

it's more like a wannabe austin but come on up, you're more than welcome to whatever you can find!
if you're really looking for a real cowboy ... the outskirts of SA are filled with cowboy towns. have you made it out to bandera? beautiful area. then there's luckenbach and gruene hall in gruene - both a must see.
hey ... did you know george strait lives in SA?
how long have you been in SA and why in the world are you here instead of colorado?!?!?
Yep, George Strait lives about 20 miles from me...
Been to Boerne, Helotes, and Greune. but not Bandera, yet.
In San Antonio itself they are mostly those 'wana-be' ones.
I knew where to find the 'real deal'in Colo. Spgs.
I followed my boys to SA when they came down.
My daughter-in-law came here for the college.
Got stuck here and didn't get back home, yet.
Need to get myself a job in a smaller town
in the hill country and move or something,
and then I'd feel more at home!

colorado springs would be my suggestion ;)

i'm afraid there's not going to be a town in texas that will remind you of colorado ... except to remind you, you're not there. there are some pretty spots close enough to civilization to commute (i.e., like Gruene, Wimberly, Boerne) but to live in a small town and try to make a living is so hard. for one, most don't offer retirement or medical insurance and the pay is normally much less than in the city. i commute 46 miles ea way to austin and it's killing me.
up until the recent gas surges ... colorado never seemed that far off. i kept telling myself i could come home to visit on as little as a long 4 day weekend. now, i have to rethink that. my only child is graduating next month and then plans on attending tech school in irving. his girlfriend is a year behind him and she plans on college in lubbock for 4 yrs. he plans on them following me to colorado after that. i don't know if i can leave him. especially since i'm starting to feel immobilized by the gas crisis. when it costs $75 gas to/from houston for the weekend ... something's not right. i'm contemplating my odds of survival if i bought a motorcycle to commute on. i love riding as a passenger but not so sure i could handle it on my own. i'm serious ... something has to 'give'. i want to be in the mountains so bad but i have so much to work out first.
back to small towns ... i meant to post earlier to let you know llano was having their crawfish festival this weekend. surely there would've been cowboys at that one. you might want to check out the rodeos & events around central texas. here's a few links ...
hey, here's an idea. because the thing is not only finding where the cowboys are ... but finding SINGLE and AVAILABLE ones. my friend and i volunteered to work the beer and wine booth at the marble falls bluebonnet jazz and fine arts festival the beginning of april. we had a blast ... we weren't your 'average' booth servers - we served with personality! it's a way to meet locals ... and you know that's a way not only to make friends but to open more doors. just because you live in SA doesn't mean you can't contact the small cowpoke towns around there and volunteer to work the rodeos, festivals, etc. plus, for your time ... you usually get a free pass into the event and perhaps a t-shirt and tickets (for food and drink). perks i wasn't expecting. heck, i wasn't expecting it to be so much fun either!
I'm afraid you are right..no place in Texas will be 'Colorado'.
And I too have thought about how small towns have charm, but the job outlook in them is dim. Commute....thinking about that too...have thought about moving to Boerne several times...hadn't thought about Wimberly until now...and had thought about Gruene too...and over towards Helotes.
Your commute...46 miles one way...oh my gosh! With the gas prices like they are!
My truck gets 9 to 10 miles per gallon ...heavy sigh...but at least it has no payments... Gotta look on the bright side.
When we all (my 2 boys and a daughter-in-law) moved to TX, we had planned on going back to Colo after her college...that was 10 yrs. ago...and now there are two daughters-in-law, and 3 grandkids, and we are still in TX...
One boy is here in SA, the other is in TX too, but not in SA. We had all wanted to stay close to each other in location, and still do...like you want to do with your boy. The rest of my family lives in the Springs. I too feel immobilized for now...and I agree...something has to give! I had thought about a motorcycle or a 'scooter'..but have not convinced myself yet to get one...the danger of the road and all...and I too have not exactly driven a motorcycle before...(not more than 20 feet once.
I too want to be in the mountains so darned bad...but have so much to work out first also! We can encourage each other!
I do appreciate the suggestions about rodeos and events and volunteering to work 'em. I would fit right in....and have a blast too. I come from a family of small-rodeo lovers. My dad actually died from a rodeo accident way back in the 70's...He was ropin' and he and the horse went down...the horse survived, but he did not....but at least he went doing what he loved in life!
Loved what ya said about not 'average' serving, but with 'personality'..I love that!
Thanks for the links! Will check it all out.
Did find one 'good ole boy' a few years back who was single and available...at least that is what he said...found out later that he wasn't... and got out in a heartbeat!

aww Dianna ...

sorry about your dad. what a horrible accident and i know it must have been traumatic ... but what a healthy way to look at it ... that he died doing something he loved. death isn't so much about the one that passes on but those that are left behind and how they deal with it. i know ... i lost my mom when i was just shy of being 10 (she was my everything) and my dad when my son wasn't a year old.
and i'm sorry to hear you're stuck in texas! but glad to meet a local that feels the same about the mountains as i do. i'm always trying to get my best friend and her family and extended family to move to the mountains. i just don't think they love them as much as i do. wusses. i wanted to start our own texas commune in colorado!
PS: feel free to holler at me outside of the forum. (everyone might not be interested in my ramblings!)
I agree, I felt wierd with my last 'ramblings' to ya...
but I don't see any way to do a 'personal message'
or anything like that...how do I holler at ya? Teach me!

I lived in Marble Falls in '74-'75. I was there last summer with my daughter after she registered at UT. We ate at Chili's which, of course, didn't exist when I actually lived there. All we had was the Bluebonnet Cafe and the DQ.

Small world ...
April 30 2006, 2:42 AM
After my dad retired in '70, we moved from SAT to Kingsland (we'd always had a cabin on Lake LBJ) ... then, after I graduated i '76 I moved back to SAT for almost 5 yrs . Found my way back up here after a brief relocation to Austin. Now, I 'enjoy' both worlds by spending way too much time on the highway in between!
So, you ate at our 'Chili's by the lake'? What, you don't trust the locals and their menus? I promise no road-kill.
You must agree, quaint Marble Falls has blossomed over the years. I can remember (ok, warning: Older than dirt tale) when the only light in town was at Hwy 281 and FM 1431. Now there's about 12 and I can't remember when any of them were ever in sync!
Dianna was saying the other day that she's noticed a ton of Texans on the boards. She suggested we all oughta try to get together some time. Sounds good to me ... I say we meet up in Durango, Silverton/Ouray, Pagosa Springs, Winter Park ...
You gals are fun, I have been snooping through your notes back and forth and am getting excited to move to Texas and meet some cowboys! ehehheehhehehehehe. That is a good idea to volunteer at a local thing then you get to meet some real people! do you have any recommendations of fun events that go on around Waco? I'd love to hear about places you like to go even day trips.
Waco is a pretty good location in order to get around to all the major cities ... just a hop skip to DFW or Austin and then just a little bit further and you're in Houston or San Antone where Dianna lives.
Trying to think about what you might find in Waco ... like Dianna ... been through it but not much else. Of course there's rodeos and festivals all over the state ... especially central Texas and the Hill Country. You'll want to get out and travel all over the heart of Texas.
Enjoy your stay and welcome! I'm hoping we can get a group together next year to go to the CG festival. You know ... it's going on right now.
