fly if you must but driving is a killer. from central texas, it takes us right at 7 hrs to get out of the state. amarillo (in the panhandle) is within 30 miles of being 1/2 way to Winter Park! i kid you not. so, fly into austin or san antonio in the spring, fall or winter to catch the following:
Gruene (the Gristmill, Gruene Hall, driving River Road and rafting the river), Wimberly, Bandera (you can raft here as well), Lost Maples, Fredricksburg and Luckenbach. The riverwalk in San Antonio is worth the trip ... and while you're there, if you must satisfy your curiousity to see the Alamo, go for it ... but it looks bigger on-line.

Then you must catch a game of High School Friday Night football, grab a slab of pit smoked meat at Coooper's in Llano, hike Enchanted Rock or take a tour through the hill county in the spring (bluebonnets) or during the Christmas season to take in all the towns that light up for the occasion.
Now to Northwest Texas and the Rockies.

We actually talk like our borders encompass not only Colorado Springs, Durango and Denver and all areas west to Grand Junction and north to Steamboat. If you don't believe me, check out all the Texas license plates and if you don't see them ... listen for that give away Texas drawl of 'ya'll'.
Enjoy ...
