There is a thing called a rules briefing at APA meets. The USAPL, USPF, and AAU also give rules briefings. Your friend should attend the rules briefing because thats when you find out whats legal, whats not, and what the lifting rules are.
We even post pictures of legal squat depth up on the walls in the warm up room so there are no excuses.
As far as head judge calling depth it happens every once in awhile. I myself don't generally call depth when I head judge but when the lift is flagrantly high it's very easy to see from the front, side, or back for that matter. I have been known to red light seriously high squats while head judging. It's a no brainer to spot. Even without my glasses on I can spot it.
My suggestion is to obtain a rulebook and study it. I offer them for free so there are no excuses. Tell your friend to start practicing "real squats" because if he has a 100 pound discrepancy from one place to the other than he suffers from serious delusions as to what he can really squat. People like your friend are making a big joke of the top 100 ratings.
Tough crap if the head judge told your friend to get off the platform. Arguing with the judges is not allowed and if your buddy attended the rules briefing he would know this. Wise guys are not allowed on the platform. They only slow the meet down for the rest of the lifters.
