Last weekend I attended the LA Tech Family reunion on Saturday evening after the Saturday session. Although I never lifted for La Tech I grew very close to Coach Talton and many of his lifters.
My memories of Coach Talton and the La Tech team go back to my first year of competitive powerlifting (Spring, 1981). I can remember lifting in my first meet at Lamar University while I was enrolled at McNeese State (Spring, 1981). Now in my 20th consecutive year of competition, 15th year of meet directing, and 6th year coaching a High School team; I can appreciate what Coach Talton has done for the Sport of Powerlifting; not only at LaTech but at the State, National, and World level.
Coach Talton has always shared his ideas on lifting, coaching, meet directing, etc. with me. And I always listen and apply his suggestions.
What really made Saturday night in Alexandria special was hearing all of his powerlifting alumni (from the World Champ to the local champ) thank him for all that he taught them; not only about powerlifting but their lessons in dedication, perseverance, giving back to the sport and commitment to team.
Thank you Coach Talton for all you have done for all of us!!
