I am researching my family, and have come to a halt with my G/Grandfather Fred or Frederick Bancroft, born around 1880 in the Leeds area.
I know he died in Hunslet in 1945 but I cannot find any details of his birth or his parents.
Is anyone else researching this line?
Thanks
Just a fishing expedition to see if anyone from the Bancroft families could add to my research into the life of James Bancroft 1829-1884. He married Mary-Ann Branson on Nov.28,1863. Listed in the Bancroft strays from Yorkshire and later moved to Chelsea. I own a personal item with the inscription "To James Bancroft from your Ovenden friends" (bonus points to anyone who can identify this item). There was an inquiry from "Kate", dated Nov.15,2005 on this post looking for info about the same person. Would love to contact anyone who could add to my research and am willing to share all my info. I have extensive military history on James from the Crimean War, Battle of Inkerman 1854. Thanks.
Now I would just love to know WHERE you found grandfather James' marriage info!!
I have more extended family information on both lines of this union... one being my dear old grandad born to this couples daughter Maud. Also, a few generations backwards.
That "sword thru the cage of his jaw" was a pretty gruesome, but exciting report to read, hmm?! He does not appear to have enjoyed his choice of military enlistment for it's entire and "extended" term!
Drop me an email at oldswimcoachkt@hotmail.com. I'm happy to share, also.
Thanks!
Kate
PS. Jarlath, thanks for letting me know about this post! Your site has developed so nicely - it's been a while since I was here last.
Can you send me a reference to read about whys & how the PRO has all PR's ransom? I made the trip to England & found the entire floor torn out!

Looking for information on Philemon Bancroft born West Yorkshire area around early 1800's.
Trying to find out if I am following the right line. John Thomas Bancroft born Rotherham 1878 (I believe this could be my grandfather), John Thomas was the son of John Bancroft (who was Philemon's son) born Lightcliffe, Halifax abt 1845, he married Sarah Walker (born in Scotland). John (b 1845) had a brother Joseph and I know they lived in Hull area for a number of years before John ended up in Rotherham area where John Thomas was born.
John Thomas possibly married Fanny Martin in 1901 in Sheffield but later in 1920's I believe he lived with my grandmother who as far as I can tell was Sarah Jane Shakeshaft (who married Joseph Legdon) before taking up with John Thomas Bancroft. The odd thing is, is that Sarah Jane decides to call herself Fanny Bancroft (nee Smith) on birth certificates of the 3 children she had with John Thomas Bancroft but I do know that her other children including 3 of my aunts were Legdons.
It is a very tangled story which I am trying to unravel, does anyone have any information on the family which may help. Thanks Anne
Anne,
Philemon Bancroft was a farmer at Lightcliffe Nr Halifax, and was the son of James Bancroft 1768-1840 & Sarah 1767-1831.
He was baptised 15/8/1808 at Lightcliffe.
I did not know he had a son called John.
I have a few more details...e mail me if you want them on :

I'm trying to research my family line, and have got back to a James Anthony Bancroft who was born around 1846 and on the 1881 census was living at Soyland nr Halifax with his wife Hannah and five children.
Does anyone know who his parents were?
Thanks
James Anthony Bancroft was born in Ovenden,nr Halifax.
He married Hannah Whiteley in 1868 at Halifax.
He was a stone mason by trade.
I think he was the son of William & Hannah, although this is not certain as there were lots of Bancrofts in Ovenden at this time, and I have never been able to find any record of his baptism.

I have too much detail to put in this forum section, but if you can contact me in my direct e-mail, I can let you have all the details.
Can you also let me know what details you already have, if any.

Looking for some help with trying to find some details on John Bancroft, who was born in Sheffield around 1845, and died in 1899 also in Sheffield.
Has anyone got further details on him?
Thanks.
I'm trying to find some information on Joseph Bancroft, who did in Oxenhope Yorkshire in 1785. I've managed to find his burial details at Haworth, but cannot seem to find any details about his birth/baptism.
Can anyone offer any help or advice?
I am looking to trace my family roots/name My grandfather was Major Bancroft. I am unsure of his birthplace. My immeadiate family is Father Andrew Bancroft Married Angela Honeycombe.
Hope anyone out there can help.
I think Major's parents might be Thomas Bancroft b1853 from Bolton & Margaret Parkinson b 1855 Leigh. They were married 1877 at Bolton and had at least 2 other children, Susannah b 1875 & Annie b 1876.
Looking for more information on James, born abt. 1829, York. He and wife Mary are listed in Yorkshire Strays, but moved to Chelsea + had their family there. He was in the Crimean War, rank of Ensign (Pvt) # 5330, serving at the 2nd Battle of Inkerman, 1854, with the 3/G1. Is there a way to find more information about him through military sources? Suggestions?
James possibly died 1884, age 54, London, and certainly before his daughter's marriage in 1892.
