My mother told me last month that her brothers and Carlson were friends and that he had visited their parents' house. Their names are LtCol James Edward McLaughlin and Major John Willard McLaughlin. They are both deceased.
I was visiting my uncle at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1950 when his unit, a reserve rifle battalion, was activated and put on a train to go to California enroute to Korea. It was composed largely of veterans of WWII who lived in South Philadelphia and many of them were related to each other. When I came out of the Marines in 1956 after a three year enlistment, I found out that they had taken a beating.
My nephew has served in the Marines. His son is serving now. |
