MILINET: 5th Response To "A 'Marine Secret
Execution' Note From MILINET"
========================================
Good morning.
The Publisher is listening, and we have for
three weeks. We appreciate all
the comments, mostly contrary, which we have
received from far and wide
about the book's scheduled publication.
We have learnt what we wanted to know after
three weeks of pre-publication
announcement of the book on the Internet which
we still think was a prudent
decision. We have now removed all references to
the book on our web site
and on the particular web page where it was
displayed.
We recognize that the letter from US Rep. Major
"Jimmy" Roosevelt to the
Author has little value as far as the "rules of
evidence go" unless we have
the original. What we have is a copy and not a
perfect one at that. The
only factor in our mind supporting the
authenticity of the letter is, if
someone is going to make a fake they would put
in far more conclusive words
from the writer's pen.
Regarding muster rolls, we can accept the
premise that the author and a few
squad members could "vanish" from Marine
records if the stakes were high
enough for a powerful individual. And we can
accept that it would be near
impossible to do the same with famous names,
and indeed, the ones the
author mentions do check out - sort of.
However, we have difficulty with
the two the author named as "buried in a dune
on Makin" who the author says
were replaced by the two unfortunate greenhorns
at Pearl Harbor before
shipping out to Guadalcanal.
Decision to proceed with publication is pending
the arrival of the
following information and their corroboration
of the author's service in
the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion:
- document due from the author, DD-214 issued
by the VA
- document due from the author, "Certificate in
Lieu of Lost Discharge
Papers" issued by the Pentagon
- document due from the US Raiders Association
per their historian (Mr.
Jerome J. C. Beay at phone number
1-208-362-3118) the author's service
record issued by the National Archives. This,
the historian says can take
up to two months. We're willing to wait.
Regarding our contract with the author, no
money changed hands and the
author can withdraw the manuscript from our
consideration anytime before
publication and cancel the contract for lack of
performance on our part. We
have 6 months to publish a book and that period
has already past for this
one. For our part, we can cancel the contract
anytime. In either event,
the author will be free to take the manuscript
to another publisher or
publish it himself over which we will have
absolutely no control.
Respectfully.
