Anyone know where I can get one of these in thew U.S. for a Renault Alliance? My guess is that this is an AMC tool as opposed to a Renault tool?

Fuel pump can be removed without special tools

Hi,

On my European R11, I can remove the fuel pump with just my default toolkit (I don't know the english name for the toolkit). My fuel pump is attached with 3 standard 6-sided bolts (one of them is the inverse of a bolt, again I don't know the english word for it). I just use the wrench with the dedicated piece of metal to make it longer.
About the sending unit: don't know what you mean. The "magic electronic ignition timer computer module (ECU?)"? Maybe your american car has more pieces than my Renault.

Greetings from Holland,

Electric fuel pump removal needs special tools

The U.S. AMC/Renault Alliance has electronic fuel injection -- this required an electric fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit (all one assembly) which mounts inside the fuel tank. This unit is held inside the tank using a special retainer ring which requires a special tool to remove. Does anyone know where I can find such a tool?

Note: the European Renault 9 uses a mechanical fuel pump that mounts to the engine that is simple to remove. This is not the fuel pump type that I need to remove.

I made one using an old 3/8" drive socket and some 1/2" angle iron. I welded a piece across the socket and then welded two pieces at right angles down from that piece that would engage two of the tabs sticking up on the retaining ring. You must spray the retaining ring area with WD40 and use a screw driver and hammer to loosen the ring all the way around before you try and turn it. Save the oring, new ones are hard to find. Paint the top part of your tank if you have it out because that is where they rust. If you do not want to take it out I can tell you where to cut an access hole in the trunk floor to remove the pump.

Dear all,

I have been looking for the guide for long time but I have not found a really good book for it. Does anybody know where can I find it?
I guess other people would like it as well.
Sometimes I would like to check something or just to know how to do.

Thanks,
victor from Hungary
