I hope someone out there has a good memory and is a long time reader of historical romances. Several years ago I purchased a book from the used book store. The story line is about a man who was supposedly killed while fighting in a crusade or some such war. His cousin or could be brother had him assassinated but he survived his injuries. Since the hero had been away from home for so long the imposter looked enough like him to be able to take his place ruling his lands. I remember the imposter had a really evil mistress. He was pretty evil himself. The hero of course makes his way back home and discovers this imposter in his place. He hides in the forest until the time is right to confront this imposter and take back his rightful place. In the forest is where the hero meets the heroine but I don't remember why she is there. I wish I could supply more information but I can only recall bits and pieces of the story. I do remember that this was a historical romance by a popular author. I don't think the story line was medieval but a period a little later. Please let someone have a better memory that mine is right now!
