16 May - The Alarm + Spear of Destiny + The Mighty Wah!
>From the early eighties hit '68 Guns', Mike Peters led The Alarm worldwide with Top 50 singles, six
successful albums, packed out venues, critical acclaim and, most importantly, a loyal following. World
tours; duets with Dylan and Neil Young; live MTV gig broadcasts; a brush with cancer and USA No 1 hits
have not dulled this enigmatic and passionate performer, still true to his Welsh roots. Arising from
the grave of bleak post-punkers Theatre of Hate, SPEAR OF DESTINY was formed in 1983 by Hate
singer/guitarist Kirk Brandon and bassist Stan Stammers, also including drummer Chris Bell and
saxophonist Lasettes Ames. Their brand of goth-rock encompassed self-consciously romantic, poetic
lyrics set to dark, slow dirges, with occasional saxophone work and Scottish melodic touches. Joined by
drummer Dolphin Taylor (Tom Robinson/Stiff Little Fingers) they recorded One Eyed Jacks, generally
regarded as their best work. Adam Ant guitarist Marco Pirroni joined for 1987's Outland, which marked a
return to form and the band moved to Virgin for 1988's The Price You Pay. The Mighty Wah! is the
inspiration of Liverpudlian Pete Wylie - singer/songwriter, raconteur, maverick, pop star and scouser.
(+1) Ever the optimistic enthusiast and musical experimenter, this is the man who was given a guitar by
Mick Jones of The Clash and told that he could pay him back "when he was famous". He always seemed
destined for greatness although actual stardom didn't arrive until, as The Mighty Wah!, the release of
"The Story of the Blues" reached No 3 Xmas Day 1982.

17 May - Achtung Baby - Tribute to U2
One of the very best tributes to the Irish supergroup U2, currently reclaiming the title 'Best Rock 'n'
Roll Band In The World'. Formed 93' and veterans of European/Middle East tours, the band have also
recorded 'I Still Haven't Found (What I'm Looking For) with the band's permission and singer Andy
Bagnall was a finalist in 'Stars In Their Eyes" as, of course, Bono. They also won Best Soundalike in
last year's 'Battle of the Fantasy Bands' on BBC hosted by Terry Wogan. Twenty-five years on, U2's
'rock band with a conscience' music is as fresh and relevant as ever from winning a 1978 talent contest
in Limerick as The Hype, first real hit New Year's Day, the 13-minute Live Aid performance of Bad and
eventual assured perma-greatness with "The Joshua Tree". The '90s saw the band re-inventing again with
the industrial guitars and electronic dance beats of 'Achtung Baby', a mind-boggling sensory-overload
"Zoo TV" tour and the more fun and funk orientated PopMart extravaganza of 1997. The rest is history so
come and enjoy this superbly professional sound-alike AND look-alike tribute to The World's Biggest
Band. It's a Beautiful Day, alright. More info and tickets:

18 May - Gizagig Gig!
Red:Shift + Leon + Nerve Harvest + Fallen Origin
This first showcase features four cracking Yorkshire bands. Scarborough trio Fallen Origin ambitiously
claim to "cover the unexplored spectrum of emotion, full of energy, melody and intensity," - take it
from us they rock fearsomely as well. Sheffield's Leon were recently hailed by Rhythm magazine as "On a
kind of Smashing Pumpkins / Feeder / Ride kind of trip. With them being young and good looking, we
wouldn't be surprised if they turned up on the Radio One Evening Session in the near future." York
Uni's new industrial rock gods Nerve Harvest mix metal vocals with punk guitars and beats and samples -
taking influences from Godflesh, Ministry, Stabbing Westward and Pitchshifter. Headlining, gizagig
godfathers, York's Red:Shift deal in dark, melodic, post-punk sounds, with shades of Fugazi, Mogwai and
Joy Division. "A skilled mix of crashing guitars and crafted melodies" (Yorkshire Evening Press) More

20 May - Boris The Sprinkler + Duck Sick
Only an extremely stupid punk rock band would call itself Boris the Sprinkler but having co-opted every
genre of fast/loud/zany tuneage known to mortal science from obvious reference points like The Dickies,
The Rezillos / The Ramones to Little Richard and 60's bubblegum, people have been yelling at them since
day one. Green Bay's cheese punk machine is fronted by The Reverend Norb who, when not dressed up as a
green M&M, is throwing rolls of toilet paper. Slam-bangin' punk or circus sideshow? Their two-minute
songs are loud, fast, goofy, zany and snotty with lyrics full of humour and pop culture references. Quo
on speed! Recent supports with The Donnas / The Buzzcocks / Down By Law and The Lunachicks have done
absolutely nothing to put the world off. Check out these completely bonkers live pics and then listen
to the mp3 link of "Russian Robot". We dare you not buy your ticket INSTANTLY! More info and tickets:

21 May - Captain Skalet + Fadge + Fine Lines
An easy-listening, pun-tastic ska punk mob formed somewhere between York and Leeds in the summer of
2001, by eight kids sharing similar obsessions with sci-fi and bananas. The band are progressing
rapidly from humble beginnings, stringing together a strong set and gathering enormous support with
influences ranging from the 2-Tone years of The Specials right through to the nu-skool ska punk of Less
Than Jake - with a little bit of Dixieland thrown in for good measure. Captain Skalet's catchy guitar
riffs, honking brass, battering ram drums and witty lyrics can be bettered - but add Milo, their
crazy-ass break-dancer and … they're unbeatable! Over to the band, "Hey, we're melodic, energetic, good
looking and funny - and isn't ska all the rage nowadays, anyway?" More info:

22 May - Battle of the Bands Round Two Heat Three
Manydown + Knee Deep + Flint

23 May - CND Charity Gig!
Ideal Standard + Mr Tickle + Ryan Shirlow and The Bloody Marys

24 May - The Vibrators + The Negatives + Flint
Did you know Stiff Little Fingers lifted their name from a Vibrators b-side? Formed 1976 as a
longhaired hippy-ish r'n'b pub act but the turning point came with the arrival of Chris Spedding, late
summer 1976. Of all the UK punk acts, only The Damned and Wire released an album before the heavily
Ramones influenced Vibrators debut 'Pure Mania'. Yes, Eddie, Knox & Co were right in there at the
beginning of punk rock heaven - the 2-day 100 Club Punk Rock Festival in September which featured,
amongst many others, The Buzzcocks, Subway Sect, The Damned, Stinky Toys, Siousxie and the Banshees,
The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Girls in Vibrators songs - 'Whips and Furs', 'Wrecked On You', 'I Need A
Slave' and chart hit 'Automatic Lover' - tend to be weird, kinky, psychopathic and sadistic and first
single 'Pogo Dancing' had all their hallmarks - crisp rhythmic guitar, solid bass, machine-like 4/4
beat - and simplistic lyrics, "Why move side to side when you can jump up and down?" With a new album
recorded at legendary New York club CBGB's out soon, here's your chance to see some of the originals
from that balmy summer of '76 when the world changed forever. If you want to check out those days again
- or for the first time - checkout the excellent Punk 77! site. More info:

27 May – Amberstone + Stent

28 May - King Prawn + Whitmore
Slugboy (drums), Al Rumjen (vocals), Barbar Luck (bass/vocals) and Devil Hands (guitar), collectively
the eccentric London-based King Prawn, combine everything from ska and punk to hardcore in their
musical repertoire. Barbar, the mad bearded one, is the band's trump card telling everyone to "Go
crazy, man!" in true rock 'n' roll style, and then describing the band as the "Stupidest bunch of
*****s on any stage!" Supercharged versions of old social commentary favourites "Racist Copper" and
"Role Model" are ever-present and underground faves King Prawn will bring a smile to your face, onstage
entertainment being the key factor. And that's what it's all about, right? Oi! More info and tickets:

29 May - Battle of the Bands Round Two Heat Four

30 May - The Fence Collective
King Creosote + Pip Dylan + The Jose + Gummi Bako
In 1994, Kenny Anderson aka King Creosote and singer/songwriter with folk/cajun/bluegrass/Psychobilly
Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra and indie/thrash merchants The Khartoum Heroes vowed to bring to the world -
"songs with relatively few chords in a non-bluegrass style". Detesting noodling virtuoso if a part
can't be recorded in one take, it is scrapped for something simpler. No sample should be longer than
four seconds. Appearing with Captain Geeko The Dead Aviator (drums), Pepe Bako or Captain Birdseye
(bass), occasional noises and Melodica from the late Billy Pilgrim, and even rarer
guitar/banjo/box-playing from the later Pip Dylan of Spain. Rumours abound of an appearance by fellow
Fence Records artist the legendary NME-feted comedy genius and lo-fi oddity Lone Pigeon, an original
member of The Beta Band and sort of John Lennon had gone folk, slightly more focussed Syd Barrett and
the best melodic bits of The Betas themselves.
