Phew! Look what's happening this Bank Holiday weekend at Fibbers, the
area's only seven nights a week live music venue and café bar ……

Don't forget when you're starving at teatime, The Golden Fleece (opposite
Marks & Sparks and The Shambles) will be serving food until 9pm and when
the sun shines - we're got the biggest, best and newest beer garden as
well!

Fri 26 - COASTA + High Sound + The Blue Macs
Matt Appleton's harmony drenched Americana rock, shades of Neil Young, The
Byrds/Eagles/Doobie Brothers/Jayhawks brought bang up to date. Rare York
gig and sure to be very busy, early arrival recommended.

Sat 27 - THE JOHN OTWAY BIG BAND
The world's greatest rock'n'roll failure - but is he? Recent accolades for
his lyrics and an enduring, growing fanbase exists for this enigmatic,
wacky performer. Tongue-in-cheek but heartfelt parodies hide the genuinely
effacing man behind the mask. He is compulsive entertainer who will,
seemingly, stop at nothing to entertain and succeeds every time. This is
also a ONELIST gig! (£6 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk
or the venue)

Sun 28 - SEAFOOD + Gerling + Easy
Recent tour with IDLEWILD, “Surviving The Quiet” reached No 4 in NME indie
charts, Sonic Youth/Pavement/Pixies. They're all over the place at the
moment. £4 advance - tickets available from the venue)

Mon 29 - AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH SPECIAL GUEST LLOYD COLE + Cousteau +
The Accidental Tourists
Derbyshire born in 1961, Chelsea supporter (!) Lloyd Cole's first roots
were punk. Initially a Velvet Underground fan playing bass and vocals, he
discovered funk/soul and formed the then 9-piece Staples Singers-ish Lloyd
Cole & The Commotions with Neil Clark (guitar), and wrote "Are You Ready
To Be Heartbroken?". "Perfect Skin" and "Forest Fire" followed and the
band were joined by rhythm section Stephen Irvine & Lawrence Donegan. They
signed to Polydor and Perfect Skin was a minor chart hit as album
"Rattlesnakes" entered the charts at 13 and went gold. Two more hits
"Brand New Friend" and "Lost Weekend" followed but the band broke up after
a farewell tour to promote the critically-heralded masterpiece
"Mainstream". Ironically they produced their finest performances. Lloyd
went to ground in New York but began to enjoy working again on his '89
debut solo album. He recorded "Don't Get Weird on Me, Babe." in '91 to
critical acclaim and "Bad Vibes" in '93, mixed with Bob Clearmountain. A
consummate writer and performer whose work has stood the test of time,
Lloyd will be performing a one-hour acoustic set. (£6 advance - tickets
available from www.fibbers.co.uk or the venue)

Tue 30 - THE VIGILANTES OF LOVE + Belljar
Rolling Stone said of their last album, "File next to REM's "Document" for
essential. This passionate and timeless American New Country act combines
the the rawness and energy of youthful garage with REM, Tom Petty, Neil
Young and Dylan - all at the same time. Buddy Miller, a singer/songwriter
and guitarist for Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris said, "The poetry and
intelligence of Bill Mallonee's songs rivals Dylan's and the spirituality
and inspiration of them is like the timeless hymns. He is one of my
all-time favourite artists". Influenced by alt-country movement artists
like Son Volt, Wilco and Victoria Williams and championed by Bob Harris,
here is one thoroughly recommended gig! (£6 advance - tickets available
from www.fibbers.co.uk or the venue)

And at York Barbican:

Sat 27 - THE SINGING KETTLE
A return by these popular children’s entertainers after their highly
successful show last year. “The Homemade Band Show” is a brilliant blend
of fun, sing-along songs and a simple but imaginative story. Kids are
encouraged to bring their own homemade percussion instruments – and join
in the fun! Over the years, the Singing Kettle has grown from being a
small show for children, touring playgroups and schools, to the biggest
box office draw in the UK. Early shows were based on clues for songs
inside brightly coloured kettles. While this principle is still central to
the action, plot lines and stage sets are now built around imaginative
story lines, transforming the original concept into a spectacular musical
for the whole family. Once described as pantomime without the boring bits,
this special brand of family entertainment appeals to all children from 2
to 8 year olds as well as older children and mums and dads. On the box,
the show is presented by Artie Trezise, Cilla Fisher, Jane Fisher and
Kevin MacLeod, with Gary Coupland providing accompaniment on keyboards,
accordion, trombone and saxophone. (£9.00, £7.00 conc, £6.25 each for
family of four advance - tickets available from the venue)

Sun 28 - THE SOWETO STRING QUARTET
Today's Soweto String Quartet (comprising the three Khemese brothers and
friend, Makhosini Mnguni) grew out of a family musical conspiracy as the
children had no choice but to flourish in their artistry "in spite of the
political oppression that held us down". Sons of a virtuoso conductor
father and choral singer mother, Sandile and Reuben were naturally drawn
into their uncle's township music school and soon switched from choral
singing to playing violins for the Soweto Symphony Orchestra. After
pursuing lengthy music scholarships in England, Sandile returned to the
township to tutor his brothers and also obtained a job teaching the
traditional African marimba. For ten years, this South African quartet was
taunted at home for playing "funny European instruments" but, since then,
has intensified its eclectic mix of African rhythms and intonations.
Accompanied by a five-piece band, they bring guitars, keyboards and
percussion in to "a musical exploration of the inner dimensions of their
cross-cultural experience". An absolute must for World music fans and -
hey, Word Up - it's funky too. (£15.00, £12.50 and £10.00 advance -
tickets available from the venue)

Have a good weekend, we'll see you at some point ....
