Astrophotography Question

Another part of the hobby I may try and explore is astrophotgraphy. My question is when looking at photographs of planets, nebulas and galaxies how did the objects in the photos get so big? Was it just a photo that was enlarged? Or were cameras actually hooked up to telescopes(is that even possible)? I've seen pictures of planets such as Jupiter and Saturn taken with they say a 6" or smaller telescope and they appear very large and in excellent color detail. If that is possible how would you go about doing that? Forgive my ignorance but I am very new to this and want to make the right decision before I decide to spend lots of money. Also I want to thank those that answered my previous question.

Thanks again
