First rule about buying a telescope. DO NOT buy one from a department store. They are only interested in making a sale and will give you NO support.
My suggestion is not to buy one just yet. Find a local astronomy club and roll up to a meeting. Club folk are very friendly, will answer any questions about astronomy that you have, and if you are at an observing night, will let you look through their 'scopes.
This will give you an idea of the type of telescopes that are available and at what price. There may even be second hand 'scopes available for sale.
The internet is good for information also.
