"Our enemies are Medes and Persians, men who for centuries have lived soft and luxurious lives; we of Macedon for generations past have been trained in the hard school of danger and war. Above all, we are free men, and they are slaves. There are Greek troops, to be sure, in Persian service - but how different is their cause from ours! They will be fighting for pay - and not much of at that; we, on the contrary, shall fight for Greece, and our hearts will be in it. As for our foreign troops - Thracians, Paeonians, Illyrians, Agrianes - they are the best and stoutest soldiers in Europe, and they will find as their opponents the slackest and softest of the tribes of Asia. And what, finally, of the two men in supreme command? You have Alexander, they - Darius!"

he says we the Macedonians free men, we shall fight for Hellas. also we have foreign troops like the illyrians etc. if Alexander consider himself and his men a separate ethnic group from the rest of Hellenes then he would have add the Hellenic troops with the foreign ones and of course he wouldn't have say we fight for Hellas.
ok i know Alexander was a grekoman i am sure christos stefou knows better than him :-p

First, persians destroyed ancient greeks and also conquered modern Macedonia. Then...
Contrary to all ancient greek settlements in the south aegean, SOMEHOW, a nation called MACEDONIANS founded an inland civilization in the middle of the Balkans. Then they started to destroy persians and also commit mass destructions toward ancient greek cities.
...and this nation were actually ancient greeks like arnavites are also greek?

abdal kanuniss read again the historic passage. Alexander himself says he fights for Hellas and he consider himself and the Macedonians as of the same stock with the rest of Hellenes.
the crap u post are irrelevant and product of your blind hate against Hellas

Aptal papagan_solunaki; According to most historicians in the world, Macedonians were not greeks. Modern greeks have already nothing to do with ancient greeks. Rewriting history is a usual greek tradition.
Btw, do you expect me to love this nation?

Kanuni read some real history books! Ones not from Turkey or ROM! MOST archaeologist, historians and linguist recognize the Ancient Macedonians as being Greek. The more archaeological evidence recovered and the more epigraphical(inscriptions) that are uncovered proves more and more the Greek case!
Now as for the Greeks not being descended from the Ancient Greeks is a huge load of cr*p! What exactly happened to the ancient Greeks? Did they just vanish? How did the Greek language stay alive and thrive for all those 1000's of years? It wasn't by non-Greeks!

This is the same Arrian who talks of the great RACIAL RIVALRY BETWEEN GREEK AND MACEDONIAN?
No Macedonian and Anatolian Greek, or Macedonian and Athenian, or Macedonian and Spartan, or Macedonian and Ionian, or whatever else you monkeys liek to create, the racial rivalry was between Greek and MACEDONIAN.
Regarding the speech proposed by Arrian, this is not matched by any other author, Justin also wrote about an Alexander speech, which is more difinitive:
..............he rode round among his troops, and addressed those of each nation in an appropriate speech. He excited the Illyrians and Thracians by describing the enemy’s wealth and treasures, and the Greeks by putting them in mind of their wars of old, and their deadly hatred towards the Persians. He reminded the Macedonians at one time of their conquests in Europe, and at another of their desire to subdue Asia, boasting that no troops in the world had been found a match for them, and assuring them that this battle would put an end to their labours and crown their glory.
As for the Oliver Stoned summary, LLLLOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL to that Hollywood peice of garbage that was NEVER SAID in any historical source

very nice passage komitaji now tell me where it says that Macedonians weren't Hellenes....
every mention of the term Macedonian or Macedonia automatically means that they belonged in a different ethnic group?
let's see similar stuff:
Spartans/Lacedaimonians:
"...the Lacedaimonians, fearful lest Themistokles should devise some great evil against them and the Hellenes, honoured him with double the numbers of gifts..." [Diodoros Sikeliotis 11.27.3]
Athenians:
"When the estrangement which had arisen between the Athenians and the Hellenes became noised abroad, there came to Athens ambassadors from the Persians and from the Hellenes.
[Diodoros Sikeliotis 11.28.1]
Hellenes of Asia Minor, the Aegean islands, Crete, Cyprus, Central Greece, the Ionian Land :
"The Athenians... reasoned that, if the Ionians were given new homes by the Hellenes acting in common they would no longer look upon Athens as their mother-city."
[Diodoros Sikeliotis 11.37.3]
probably athenians, spartans and ionians weren't Hellenes too!
komitaji do u belong to the group that creates and spread lies or in the group that believes them without the normal checking?

[At those times Greece and Macedonia were different regions.
Macedonians' timeless Greekness is obvious.]
At those times Greek-speaking west Anatolia and Greece were also different regions (as they are today), yet do you hear a RACIAL rivalry between Greeks and Greeks? OF COURSE NOT, simply becuase the Macedonians and Greeks are different races, this is what Arrian's passage means and it matters not how hard you try to twist the meaning.
[If any modern white people do what Macedonians did we will accept them as Macedonians.]
HAHAHAHA, you're pathetic Istor, first you accept Africans as pure ancient Greeks as long as they can speak greek and "agree" with you on some "key" issues, LOL!!, and now they have to be "white people" to be Macedonians, hahahahaha
Istor, Dumb or Dumber?

Can you show me where it says the Illyrians and Thracians aren't Hellenes? Can you show me where it says that Mike Tyson is not a Hellene? Is that the best response you have Panayote? So you are telling me that all the other Greeks had ONE reason to go forth with the battle, and the other "greek" tribe of Macedonians had their own reason? You're too much, seriously.
As for your Hellenes and Athenians, I say to you, show me ONE text where it states there was an OLD RACIAL RIVALRY between Athenian and Hellene as Arrian says about Greek and MACEDONIAN.
As for the Pella tablet, lol, go and claim Turkey, there are plenty more there.
