Shenanigans –

It appeared that they were going to be few penalties in this game based on the first period and the major part of the second period. Whitby got off to a fast start and tried to build on a 6-0 lead while Toronto did everything to tie the game. But it was not to last.

At 16:22 of the second period, Kyle Wailes took exception to the close checking by Ian Crashley and applied a hard cross check high on Crashley. Some said to his helmet, although the refs said that initial contact was to the upper arm. The check broke Wailes’s stick in half. Crashley objected and engaged Wailes in a pulling and shoving match. Penalties were 2 mins for cross checking, and 2 mins for roughing to Wailes, and 4 mins for roughing to Crashley. An exuberant verbal exchange between Crashley and Wailes continued for most of their time in the penalty box. I was not privy to the agreement Crashley and Wailes made in the penalty box, but they both stripped off most of their protective equipment before putting on their sweaters. At the end of the period Crashley waited for Wailes at centre floor. Wailes went directly to the dressing room. Additional penalty to Crashley, 2 mins for unsportmanslike conduct.

With the score 13-8 for Whitby would each team retreat and continue to battle another day? No. Three seconds after the draw, Ryan Shaw decided to engage Crashley in fisticuffs. After trying to separate the two players, the refs decided not intervene and let the players punch themselves out. The bout lasted a good minute with both players stripped of their equipment and sweater. It appeared that Shaw got the better of Crashley. Both were unmarked. Both received 5 mins for fighting. It is amazing that fans were shouting to let them go and when the refs did the tune changed to break them up before some one gets hurt.

Was this the end as all Whitby had to do was rag the ball for the last twenty seconds or so to end the game? It appeared that Toronto was willing to accept this tactic and start fresh for the next game. But no. At 19:42 Tommy Magee decided to step in avenge an earlier tough hit between the Campbell and McDonald clans, by challenging David Campbell to a bout. The fight was shortlived as Magee suffered a suspected broken nose. Both received 5 mins for fighting

Unfortunately, tempers flared at the end of the game in the stands and on the benches. A water bottle was thrown between the benches and a scuffle ensued behind the benches. Saner heads prevailed and the crowd dispersed.

Notes:

Without the shenanigans it was a well played game. Whitby was able to convert on their scoring opportunities while Toronto either shot wide or at Passfield. If these teams stick to lacrosse there is little to separate them and sheer determination to win will dictate the outcome.

A number of peewee national teams were present for this game in addition to a number of other teams from the provincial qualifiers. What kind of example was set for these players of the future when brawling occurs in the stands. The game is played and won or lost on the floor and between the boards.

Thanks to Trina for verifying the shots.
