In the June 1966 Car Craft a Comet Cyclone GT was the subject of a blueprinted engine and drag prepped chassis. The article was called "Title Condender for C Stock". Bud Moore prepped the engine. Prior to removing the engine, it and a few other 390's, were dyno tested and gave out 283 to 290 HP. It doesn't say if they were corrected or observed HP readings. After the Bud Moore treatment, they were again dyno tested and gave an average of 375 HP. The engine was then installed back in the car. Kelsey Hayes wheels were installed as well as M&H tires, Hurst shifter, 4.33 gears, Jardine headers, traction bars, etc. At the track, the Cyclone went a very respectable 12.97 at 108 mph. FYI. At the 1966 Winternats according to Larry Davis in "Drag Racing the Family Sedan", Ken Casteel's Cyclone had low et at 12.95 followed by Ronnie Broadhead's 442 at 13.04 followed by 2 more Comets at 13.05. Milt Shornack's Royal Pontiac GTO WITH RAM AIR actually had low et of 12.86 during qualifying but the ram air had not been listed with NHRA and had to be removed. Rather than removing it, he dropped out of the class. Guess he didn't want his tri-powered GTO to suffer the indignity of being spanked by a single 4 barrel 390 Comet. There were 23 cars in the class like 360 HP GTO's, older 409 Chevys, 427 Fords. So, is the 390 a dog?? If you are a biased magazine of the day, maybe. Otherwise, the 390 proved it's mettle at a National event over some pretty hot machines of the day.
