Soliciting advice from previous owners of Rotary engine Mazdas...

by Dulie

I have a lead on an '85 RX-7 standard with a 5-speed manual tranny and the 12A engine. It needs the carbs cleaned and the master cylinder for the clutch replaced from what I understand so far.

The owner is the grandparent of one of my friends and they're willing to let it go for me for $800, they were asking $1200, but I guess they're giving a sucker's discount to me or something .

Is there anything I should look for in terms of problems, especially since it's been sitting for at least 5 years? I've looked at it once, but I was expecting an '87, so I was prepared with information for a Gen2. It didn't look bad with my first look, it's got some spots where the clear coat on the paint is cracking and peeling a little, but I don't recall any cancer, the interior looks good, no sign of mouse/rat droppings, no smell of rodents, but it is showing some signs of weathering from the sun. It was covered up at one time (evidenced by the strange wear marks on the protruding parts and confirmed from another friend who was eyeing the car for awhile).

I do not recall the mileage, but I will be looking at it again tonight, and I'll be writing up questions for my friend's grandma to ask the actual owner (one of her sons or her husband I guess).

I am willing to walk away from the car, but so far this is the best one I've found yet.
