See you boys in 4 weeks or so. I'm floating the big ditch.. the brown and dirty... The Grand Canyon. I'm here today and tomorrow, and the fly to flag first thing on Thursday.
My buddy put in for this permit back in 1990 when I was young, fit and handsome...and I was a much better swimmer. Now we will see.
the Liquor calculater says we need 6 kegs, 10 cases of beer and 45 1.5 liter bottles of booze. Whipppeeee....
At least if we die we won't feel it.
You boys be good and I'll post some pictures when I get back.

I spent a day or two there a looooong time ago, and did the white-water rafting thing down the Snake river. The river that runs through the canyon is the Colorado, right? I forget...
Have fun.

Belko,
Tiff and I went there last spring (2007). We took a long weekend to Sedona, Flagstaff and the South Rim. There is some great hiking down there, but it gets fukking toasty in June in AZ. Flagstaff actually stays pretty nice (due to the high elevation).
If you get a chance, eat at Picazzo's pizza in Flagstaff or Sedona. Totally worth it.
By the way, Sedona is where I would like to retire to - some of the best natural beauty in desert landscapes you will ever see (next to the GC of course)

Wild North Rim

From what I've heard (and I saw it)--the Northern Rim is much wilder. There is one path on the North Rim and goes out about a quarter of a mile--the path is about 5-10 wide. It's about one mile of a dropoff and no fences on the path. You slip off the trail and you are gone. It's frickin' crazy. You get out to the end of it--and there is a place where you can stand and look straight down into the canyon. Absolutely breathtaking and scary at the same time. Angel's Trail or something like that.
Bronco--Sedona is awesome with it's red rock and supposed "vortex"--Natural Falls is awesome--however it's a natural "glacier". Getting out to it without totally falling on your azz is a feat.
With retiring there though--I hope you're extremely wealthy. Land there isn't cheap.
Speaking of wealth--I was in Vegas last weekend. I am 5-0 against casinos. Awesome. Won about $250 playing Blackjack. The liquor got the best of me--I was up $500. I started with $80. LOL.

This should be an incredible trip. Will try for the pizza place in Flag Bronco, we will be looking to eat. My buddies are driving down from Mt. Shasta in CA and some others from Logan in UT. We are doing the trip ourselves, but hired an outfitter to do our packing and menu planning for us. This seemed like a good idea since it is a huge undertaking. We will have 4 or so rafts and another 4-5 kayaks. I'll be mostly sitting with the keg, but will do a bit of rowing and a bit of kayaking which I'm sure will lead to a bit of swimming.
The entire trip will be 16 days on the river, what an awesome expedition. The crew is relatively experienced, this will be my first trip down the river, but there are at least 8 folks with canyon experience.
Yes CMBH, this is the Colorado River. Snake river runs from Wyoming to down through the bottom of Idaho and then back up the side and dumps into the Columbia. My wife actually ran Hells Canyon a couple of weeks ago. She said it was huge at 28,000 cfs... (picture 28,000 basketballs flowing under a string ever 1 second). She said when they did the rapids she looked to the shore and waved after the raft had dropped out from under her and before gravity took hold of her.
I've run mostly via kayak parts of the Snake, Colorado, Greene, San Juan, Payette(s), Logan, Clark Fork, Klama, Hood, rivers as the big ones and another dozen or so lesser known rivers. After the kids came my boating career pretty much ended...although they look great hanging in the garage.

Belko,
www.picazzos.com
I have had the shrimp, gorgonzola and candided walnut pizza - good sh!t!
The ultimate pepperoni, the quattro formaggi and the BLT pizza are also excellent. For appetizers, try the wings (they are huge), the baked brie or the meatballs. YUMMY!

yeah the into the wild kid i'm guessing did about .25 of a mile through a riffle... had the kid paddled the Grand Canyon he would have been dead after the first "real" rapid.
That kid ran into more Naked people at a time when I was all over the back-country than anyone I've ever met.

Belko, come up to John Muir Trai. sometime. You won't regret it. Yosemite Valley to Mt Whitney at 14,500+ ft. Nothing on the continental U.S. beats the scenery.
Go easy on the pizza unless you like to look like a sweating doughboy on the trail.

kids are much easier to manage when they are hung in the garage.
And Falc, yes the Payettes are north fork, south fork and main. I've run all three, but I don't do the hairball sections on the n. fork.

Welcome back. I attempted a couple of times to get this board on track with zero success. Even in my football thread, posters were still getting political. It's just hopeless being this close to November.
Too bad too--political threads are dull and boring, IMO. How was the trip?

Hey Bronco,
I was a star for my restaurant choice. Everyone wanted to go out, but didn't know what they wanted. I said that I heard Picazzo's was good from a friend so we tried it. Their well vodka was sky, and everyone was pleased, when the monster salads rolled out everyone was astonished, and the pizza's were fantastic. They liked it so much they wanted to go back for dinner when we got out off the river.
Thanks a ton for the recommend, it was about .25 mile from the hotel we stayed at and we were able to walk. Everybody on the trip really enjoyed it.

Mind Bongling how Offseason after Offseason people are stunned there is no Bengals Talk, espicially the long time posters. De Ja Vue all over again.
Consistantly I have tried hard to at least post a story to get Bengals talk going. Majority of the time no or little response, especially this time of year. Others try too, to no evail. Get over it.
Why do we have this INSANE discussion every Offseaon, like your surprised?
"This Website is goin to Hell" they cry! every year. ...It was worse in the 2004 Election offseason here.
If you gonna bitch about it, start a Bengals thread or reply to one Geesh
Somebody find a Bengals Message Board that has a lot of traffic AND that's not full of Sheople and/or mindless offtopic chatter??? I've been to Steelers and Browns boards just a dead ...like oldschoolfans love life!

Hey Dunn, I've got one for you...but I'm not sure how to get it to you or if you've been to it before but because I don't want to push another board on Fraidy's site I cant spell it out for you on a post. Even though MBS is one of my favorites ...these guys hate Mike as much as the rest of us.
Let me know if you have any Ideas how I can let you know.

and Belko is missing. The Red Cross sends a search team to the Grand Canyon. And you will be able to hear it just about anywhere near the Canyon because of the deep echoes:
"Mr. Belko, Mr. Belko!!! Where are you? Its the Red Cross!"
...and from the bottom of a deep crevace will come a barely audible voice:
"I give at the office!"
Have fun dood..
