I want to depict the surf on a beach. How do I best do this?

I have a small jug of Liquitex Gelex Extender Gel Medium and understand that it can be used; but how can I achieve a clearer appearance for the water? I don't want the water to be crystal clear. Rather, I'd like to introduce some color to it. I have successfully mixed some acrylic paint to it and even sculpted some small ripples for texture. My aim is to depict the encroaching surf on a Normandy beach with figures in the surf, under fire. I appreciate any help in this matter. Many thanks, Dave
